Dhaka, May 01 (V7N)- On May Day, leftist political parties and organizations in Bangladesh united under various banners to demand a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000 for workers. Leaders also emphasized that workers played a central role in last year's mass student-public uprising, yet still face widespread discrimination and inequality.
Gathering at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Thursday (May 1), participants marked the historic significance of the 1886 Haymarket movement in Chicago, which led to the establishment of the eight-hour workday. The area buzzed with songs, slogans, poems, and speeches advocating workers’ rights.
Chanting slogans and waving placards, workers called for:
- A Tk 30,000 minimum wage
- Overtime pay
- Timely salary disbursement
- Equal benefits and an end to labor discrimination
Additionally, processions condemned Israeli aggression in Palestine, connecting international solidarity to labor justice. Speakers said that despite recent political mobilization, true labor rights have yet to be realized.
