Dhaka, May 01 (V7N)- On May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2025, Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized that Bangladesh cannot progress if workers remain in their current conditions. Speaking as the chief guest at a program organized at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center on Thursday (May 1), he stressed that improving workers' living standards is essential for a discrimination-free and prosperous nation.

Dr. Yunus stated, "Workers stood by students and the public during the mass uprising. Today, we must ensure their full participation in rebuilding the country." He highlighted the theme of this year's May Day, "Workers and employers unite, let's build this country anew," as crucial for sustainable development.

  • Urgent implementation of Labor Reform Commission recommendations
  • Recognition of workers' contributions across garments, agriculture, construction, transport, and tech
  • Commitment to safe, healthy workplaces as a right and a condition for national growth
  • Promotion of unity between workers and employers as essential to progress

Dr. Yunus also handed over financial assistance checks to five worker families through the Workers Welfare Foundation, reflecting the government's commitment to social protection.

Other speakers included Labor Advisor Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, Ministry Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman, and Labor Reforms Commission Head Sultan Uddin Ahmed. A special ILO video message from Director-General Gilbert F. Hangbo was also presented.
