Rangamati, May 01 (V7N)- To protect the spawning season of Rui and other native fish species, the Rangamati district administration has imposed a three-month ban on all fishing activities in Kaptai Lake, effective from midnight on May 1 to July 31.

The announcement was made publicly via loudspeakers in Rangamati town on Wednesday morning. In addition to the fishing ban, the transportation and sale of fish from the lake are also prohibited during this period.

Deputy Commissioner Habib Ullah Maruf stated that the ban aims to ensure the natural breeding and development of Rui fish, along with the proper growth of fry released into the lake.

To support the affected fishing community, the government will provide food assistance to around 20,000 fishermen through special VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) cards.

The ban is an annual measure aimed at maintaining ecological balance and sustaining fish stocks in one of the country’s largest freshwater lakes.
