DHAKA, May 08 (V7N) – The United Kingdom has requested Bangladesh's support for its candidacy for a position at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The appeal was made during a meeting between British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke and Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry on Wednesday, according to a press release issued today.

During their discussion, the two officials exchanged views on a broad spectrum of bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.

Recent developments in the region were also discussed, with both sides emphasizing the need for de-escalation and stability. The Foreign Secretary reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to regional peace and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of ongoing matters.

The evolving role of the United Nations in addressing current global challenges was another key topic. The Foreign Secretary highlighted Bangladesh's active participation, particularly in UN Peacekeeping Missions, and reaffirmed the country's dedication to multilateral cooperation.

The High Commissioner and the Foreign Secretary also exchanged views on issues such as the upcoming UN80 anniversary, the UN Committee on Decolonization (C24), and ongoing judicial cooperation between the two nations.

The High Commissioner also addressed the UN's continued engagement in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh. In response, the Foreign Secretary stressed the importance of creating favorable conditions for the safe, voluntary, and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya to their homeland and urged the UK to continue its support in this crucial matter.

Both Bangladesh and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening their long-standing bilateral relationship and exploring new areas of cooperation for mutual benefit.
