SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR, May 4 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed high expectations for the party's newly elected female Members of Parliament, urging them to play a proactive role in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
The Minister’s remarks came after the female MPs paid their respects at the mazar of party founder Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and the residence of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that the inclusion of these representatives is vital for a robust legislative process.
“We hope the women MPs elected from reserved seats will play a meaningful role in making the Jatiya Sangsad more effective and functional,” he told journalists during the visit.
The 36 BNP lawmakers were among the MPs sworn in on May 3 at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The ceremony held significant weight as it solidified the opposition's presence in the current term:
Administration of Oath: Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed administered the oath of office.
High-Level Presence: Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman attended the ceremony, underscoring the leadership's support for the newly inducted members.
Seat Distribution: Out of the 50 reserved seats for women in Parliament, the BNP secured 36, all of whom were elected unopposed.
Following the swearing-in, the MPs completed formal requirements by signing the official oath papers and the parliamentary register. Their induction is expected to bolster the party's voice in policy discussions and social welfare initiatives, particularly regarding women's rights and regional development.
Minister Fakhrul concluded by noting that the party remains committed to its democratic mandate, with these 36 representatives now serving as a critical bridge between the grassroots and the national legislature.
