Dhaka, Apr 28 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Coast Guard will be significantly strengthened with new manpower and aviation support, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the 31st founding anniversary ceremony of the Coast Guard held in Agargaon, Dhaka, the minister said the government is firmly committed to enhancing the operational capacity of the force, which is responsible for safeguarding coastal areas including the Sundarbans.
He announced that helicopter services will be added to the Coast Guard fleet in the future, along with the recruitment of 10,000 additional personnel. These steps, he said, will significantly expand the force’s capabilities compared to the past.
Highlighting past and ongoing operations, the minister noted that the Coast Guard plays a crucial role in ensuring maritime security, preventing illegal activities, and assisting during natural disasters. He also credited the force for maintaining security along sea routes and contributing to the protection of the Sundarbans.
He further stated that the Coast Guard was established during the tenure of the BNP government under the leadership of Khaleda Zia, and has since evolved into a trusted national institution.
During the event, Director General of the Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Md. Ziaul Haque, said the force has gained widespread acceptance and is actively working to protect national interests. He noted that 16 members of the force have lost their lives in the line of duty during high-risk operations.
He also acknowledged a shortage of manpower, stating that filling the gap would further enhance the effectiveness of the Coast Guard in fulfilling its responsibilities.
