Dhaka, July 29 (V7N) — Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said the U.S. tariff policy contradicts the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and may cause greater instability in the global economy.
The ambassador made the remarks while speaking at the DCAB Talk organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club on Tuesday.
Yao Wen emphasized China's commitment to regional cooperation, stating that his country seeks to work in joint ventures with both Bangladesh and Pakistan. “The goal is to build a developed and prosperous neighborhood while respecting each nation’s sovereignty,” he said.
Addressing concerns about geopolitical intentions, the ambassador clarified that the China-Bangladesh-Pakistan trilateral initiative focuses solely on economic growth and regional prosperity. “It is not an alliance directed against any third party,” he added, noting that no South Asian country has formally objected to the proposal.
On the proposed Teesta Multipurpose Project, Yao Wen reiterated China’s readiness to implement the initiative. “Now, the decision lies with the government of Bangladesh,” he said.
Discussing Bangladesh’s political future, the ambassador expressed confidence in the interim government's ability to conduct a fair and acceptable election.
Turning to the Rohingya crisis, Yao stated that repatriation remains the only sustainable solution. “China is in close contact with both Bangladesh and Myanmar, but due to the current unrest in Rakhine, conditions are not conducive for return at the moment,” he explained.
On the recent crash of a Chinese fighter jet in Milestone, Yao assured that a technical team from China will soon arrive in Dhaka to investigate the cause of the incident thoroughly.
The ambassador’s statements reflect China’s ongoing efforts to expand its diplomatic and economic influence in South Asia through cooperative development and regional stability.
