Dhaka, Jan 09 (V7N)- BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has convened an emergency meeting of the party’s Standing Committee, scheduled to be held at 9:30 pm tonight (Friday) at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.

Tarique Rahman will preside over the meeting. Party sources said that the meeting is not a scheduled one and no specific agenda has been officially announced.

However, the meeting is being viewed as highly significant amid speculation that Tarique Rahman may be elected as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during or following the meeting.

Earlier, on January 4, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists in Sylhet that Tarique Rahman would be elected as the party’s chairman within a day or two.

It may be recalled that Tarique Rahman was appointed Acting Chairman of BNP in 2018, after former Prime Minister and party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was imprisoned.

Political observers believe tonight’s meeting could mark an important turning point in the party’s leadership structure ahead of the upcoming national elections.
