Dhaka, Dec 12 (V7N) — The BNP has expressed deep concern, and issued a strong condemnation and protest following the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, independent candidate for Dhaka-8 in the upcoming 13th National Parliament election and spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha. Hadi is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being shot by a miscreant on Friday afternoon.

In an official statement, the BNP described the attack as part of a “far-reaching evil plan”, claiming it was aimed at disrupting the election atmosphere.

The statement said, “This attack is undoubtedly a blueprint for spreading terrorist activities to sabotage the electoral environment. A group in the country is trying to fish in troubled waters through such terrorist acts. Fear and panic are being spread in a planned manner to gain political advantage. Violent terrorists are becoming reckless to achieve vile objectives.”

The BNP also alleged that a “malicious group” is attempting to push the nation into anarchy, undermining the democratic momentum generated by the student-public movement in July–August 2024.

Calling for public vigilance, the statement added, “Such incidents are being carried out to obstruct the path of democracy and hinder the next national elections. There is no alternative to suppressing these saboteurs with a strong hand.”

The BNP urged citizens of all walks of life—regardless of party affiliation or opinion—to remain united in safeguarding the lives and property of the people and protecting democracy and voting rights. The party warned that if unity is not maintained, “lurking terrorists may become desperate and push the country towards danger.”

The party demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi. The statement also conveyed BNP’s wishes for Hadi’s quick recovery.
