Mymensingh, Nov 10 (V7N) — A student of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal (BNP student wing) died following a clash between two factions of the party over the nomination for the Mymensingh-3 (Gauripur) parliamentary seat. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, and the victim was pronounced dead at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital around 7:30 p.m.

The deceased has been identified as Tanzin Ahmed Abid, 30, son of the late Abul Hossain from Daulat Munshir Road, Mymensingh city. According to Shafiquddin, officer-in-charge of the hospital police camp, Abid was already deceased upon arrival at the hospital. No external injuries were observed on his body, and his death appears to be natural.

The clash took place earlier in the day in Patbazar area of Gauripur municipality. The conflict arose after BNP’s national executive committee member Engineer M. Iqbal Hossain received the party nomination for Mymensingh-3, leaving Upazila BNP convener Tayebur Rahman Hiron without nomination. Following this, Hiron organized protests including railway and road blockades and occasional arson.

On Sunday afternoon, Engineer M. Iqbal Hossain held a gathering at the hostel field of Gauripur Government College, while Hiron held a separate program in the middle market area of Gauripur. As supporters of both factions crossed paths, a clash erupted. During the confrontation, stages, chairs, motorcycles, and two business establishments were damaged, and goods from the looted shops were set on fire. Hiron’s supporters claimed around 40 people were injured, while Iqbal’s faction reported 10 injuries.

Leaders from Iqbal’s side stated that Abid, a supporter of their faction, was seriously injured in the attack and later died. However, Hiron’s supporters denied any involvement in Abid’s death.

Gauripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Didarul Islam confirmed that Abid fell ill during the clash and was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He emphasized that no injuries were found on Abid’s body and noted that the victim had attended Engineer Iqbal Hossain’s gathering.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the extent of the clash between the two BNP factions.
