Dhaka, Oct 28 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a referendum in November before the upcoming 13th National Assembly elections, saying the nation must be informed about the changes and reforms in the state structure outlined in the National Charter.

A seven-member Jamaat delegation, led by Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, met the Chief Election Commissioner on Tuesday afternoon. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Golam Parwar said that holding the referendum and elections on the same day could trigger violence, potentially disrupting the referendum.

He added that Jamaat has submitted 18-point demands to ensure fair elections, all of which have been explained in detail to the Election Commission. Golam Parwar also said the commission has sought Jamaat’s cooperation.

Meanwhile, Jamaat has expressed support for the amendment of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), which allows candidates to contest under their own party symbols even within an electoral alliance.
