Dhaka, Sep 22 (V7N) – The National Citizens Party (NCP) has expressed uncertainty over whether the 13th National Assembly elections will be held in February next year, citing unresolved issues with the “July charter.”

Speaking after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Monday, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari said his party wants quick elections but only after fixing the country’s institutions.

“We are most interested in votes. But those who are promoting that NCP does not want elections are spreading propaganda,” he said.

Patwari added that the Election Commission has given a positive signal about granting registration to the NCP. However, the party has demanded one of three symbols — Shapla, White Shapla, or Red Shapla. “If we do not get one of these symbols, we will take the next step,” he warned.

The NCP has reapplied for the symbols, but the Election Commission’s list does not currently include them. The amended list of election symbols is still awaiting vetting at the Law Ministry.

Citing a survey, Patwari claimed that the NCP could win 150 seats if elections are held, while predicting the BNP would not win more than 50–100 seats. He also said his party wanted to see former army officers who “did not open fire in July,” alongside journalists, workers, and farmers from the mass uprising, represented in parliament.

At the same time, he accused BNP and Jamaat of delaying the election process. “Stop hypocrisy. We are not BNP, not Jamaat. We are independent. We will unify all the banners of the last 15 years together. The People’s Rights Council will unite with us because our ideological struggle is the same,” he said.

Patwari stressed that regardless of future alliances, the party name and symbol would remain NCP. He also noted, “We want proportional representation (PR) in the upper house, not in the lower house.”
