Dhaka, May 21 (V7N) — The National Citizens Party (NCP) held a protest rally in front of the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon on Wednesday afternoon, demanding the immediate resignation of all five election commissioners, including Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, and calling for the restructuring of the EC and the early holding of local government elections.
The demonstration began around 12:45 PM, with hundreds of NCP leaders and activists gathering to voice their dissatisfaction with what they termed a "controversial and biased" commission.
Speaking at the rally, Saiful Islam, NCP’s representative from Mirpur Model Police Station, said, “This commission has been formed hastily and lacks credibility. We demand their resignation immediately. This movement will continue until they step down.”
NCP Joint Secretary Sanwar Tushar echoed the demand, stating, “The Election Commission must be restructured without delay. Local government elections should be held first. The current EC cannot be trusted to conduct fair elections.”
Tensions escalated around 1:30 PM as demonstrators attempted to enter the EC building, prompting police intervention. Security forces, including Coast Guard, BGB, RAB, and army personnel, were deployed in and around the EC premises from early morning. Barbed wire barricades were placed on the main road leading to the building to control the situation.
The NCP had announced this protest during an emergency press conference held late Tuesday night (May 20). The party has pledged to continue its agitation until their demands are fulfilled.
The protest adds to the growing political tension as calls for electoral reform intensify in the run-up to the national elections.
