Gazipur, May 18 (V7N) — A deadlock has developed at the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur, over the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor, bringing administrative and academic activities to a standstill amid ongoing student protests.

According to university authorities, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammad Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, has officially assumed office. However, protesting students have rejected the appointment and vowed to continue their blockade until their demands are met.

The unrest began after the official notification of his appointment was issued last Thursday. Since then, students under the banner of “general students” have blockaded the main gate of the campus, effectively halting entry and exit of officials and staff.

Earlier tensions escalated when reports surfaced of the VC joining the campus, leading students to lock the main gate. The situation turned violent at one point, involving clashes, brick-throwing, and a police response using tear gas to disperse crowds. Additional law enforcement personnel were later deployed to restore order.

Student protesters argue that, as a specialized engineering institution, DUET’s Vice-Chancellor should be selected from senior and qualified faculty members within the university rather than external candidates.

They also alleged that supporters of the appointment, including members linked to the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and outsiders, were involved in confrontations on campus, further escalating tensions.

Gazipur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam said that at least 14 to 15 people, including students, police personnel, and an Upazila Executive Officer, were injured during Monday’s clashes. He added that preparations are underway to file a case regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, the university administration issued a statement confirming that Professor Mohammad Iqbal has taken charge and begun official duties, even as protests continue to disrupt normal operations on campus.
