Savar, Sept 12 (V7N) – During the ongoing vote counting for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka-19 constituency candidate Maulana Afzal Hossain was seen at the university’s main gate late on Thursday night.
Around 2 a.m., Afzal Hossain arrived with 15 to 20 party activists and took position near the gate. Speaking to reporters, he said, “The trouble began after the hhatra Dal’s VP candidate entered Hall No. 15. I came here simply to get updates on the election.” Shortly afterward, he left the spot on a motorbike, though his supporters continued to remain there.
At the same time, several groups of Islami hhatra Shibir activists and sympathizers also gathered at the university gates. They claimed they were waiting through the night in anticipation of the election results, inspired by Shibir’s performance at the Dhaka University central students’ union polls.
Witnesses reported that around 1:30 a.m., nearly 200 Shibir supporters were seen near the Dairy Gate, another 200 at the Prantik Gate, and over 100 at the Bishmail Gate.
When contacted, Jahangirnagar University Proctor Dr. A.K.M. Rashidul Alam said, “I was not aware of the matter. I have instructed the security team to look into it.”
The JUCSU election was held on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. across the university’s 21 residential halls. However, citing irregularities, hhatra Dal and at least three other panels boycotted the election in the evening, demanding a fresh poll.
