Mongla, Jun 12 (V7N) – Miscreants carried out an ambush and vandalism at a Coast Guard station in Mongla, Bagerhat, leaving several Coast Guard personnel injured.
The attack took place on Thursday (June 11) afternoon at the Coast Guard station in the Joymonir Ghol area of Chila Union, adjacent to the Sundarbans in Mongla Upazila.
According to the Coast Guard, the force has intensified regular patrols, intelligence surveillance and operations along the Sundarbans coast to maintain law and order, suppress forest piracy and prevent smuggling. As part of these efforts, a permanent Coast Guard station was established in the strategically important Joymonir Ghol area.
The Coast Guard stated that since the station was set up, criminal activities involving pirates and smugglers in the Sundarbans region have been significantly disrupted. The supply of logistics, weapons and other equipment to such groups has reportedly been hampered, making it difficult for them to continue their operations.
The force believes that the attack was carried out by criminal elements in retaliation for the Coast Guard’s ongoing efforts in the area. According to a statement, the assailants launched the planned attack and vandalism in an attempt to force the Coast Guard to withdraw from the region.
Following the incident, the Coast Guard took immediate measures to bring the situation under control. Authorities said a joint operation is underway to determine the exact motive behind the attack, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
