RAJSHAHI, Mar 13, (V7N) – Former Rajshahi-1 constituency MP and former district Awami League president Omar Faruk Chowdhury has been accused of threatening a young man for allegedly 'taking money' during a conversation with leaders and activists on an online group call. The young man's name is Faisal Sarkar Ami (35). Fearing death, he filed a written complaint with Tanor Police Station on Wednesday. A total of six people, including Omar Faruk Chowdhury, have been charged in the complaint.
According to the complaint, on Monday (March 9) at around 11 pm, Faruk Chowdhury, who was in hiding, spoke to the leaders and activists in an online group call. The discussion raised the issue of taking money from various sectors while in power. At that time, Faisal Sarkar commented, 'You are eating money, from their hands.' Enraged by this, Faruk Chowdhury said to him, 'You come forward. Your situation will get really bad.'
Faisal Sarkar alleged that since the change of government, Faruk Chowdhury had been intimidating and threatening him online at various times. On the night of March 9, he was asked to join a group call. He joined there and protested against the teacher-employee recruitment business and financial transactions in the deep tubewell project in Tanor upazila. The complaint states that during this time, Faruk Chowdhury and others abused him and intimidated him in various ways, both publicly and online. He fears that he could suffer major losses at any time.
In the 5-minute 13-second audio conversation, allegations were also raised against Abul Basar Sujon, the general secretary of the Tanor Municipality Awami League, of taking money in the name of providing a job. He is also in hiding. In the conversation, Faisal Sarkar claimed that 1.2 million taka was taken from his cousin on the pretext of providing a job as a peon. In this regard, Faruk Chowdhury said, if Sujon took money, then there is no reason to implicate his (Faruk) name.
At that time, Farooq Chowdhury said, "Some people may have taken money and spent it on party work. However, it is not right to put the responsibility on them."
However, Faisal Sarkar said that he was responsible for those involved in these activities and the common people would think that the money went to him. At this stage, Farooq Chowdhury got angry and asked him to keep quiet. Later, he allegedly got more agitated and threatened him. Tanor Police Station OC SM Masud Parvez said that the complaint has been received. The matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken.
It is worth noting that after the fall of the government on August 5, 2024, three-time former MP and former president of the district Awami League, Omar Farooq Chowdhury, fled to India. While he was a member of parliament, he was often in the news for his controversial activities, outrageous comments and behavior.
