TEKNAF, March 1, (V7N) - The Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued 153 people, including women and children, from deep-sea areas near Saint Martin’s Island on Sunday. At the same time, 15 suspected human traffickers were detained and later handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station.
Coast Guard media officer Lt. Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the operation, codenamed “Samudra Prohori” (Sea Patrol). Acting on intelligence, a Coast Guard vessel intercepted a suspicious trawler in the southwest waters of Saint Martin’s. When ordered to stop, the trawler attempted to flee but was chased down and seized.
On board, authorities found 153 Bangladeshis and Rohingya who were allegedly being trafficked to Malaysia. Preliminary questioning revealed that traffickers had lured them with promises of better jobs, higher wages, and low-cost migration. Victims said they were recruited from Cox’s Bazar, Teknaf, and other districts.
The Coast Guard stated that rescued individuals will be provided with necessary assistance and handed over to relevant authorities after verification. Legal proceedings against the detained traffickers are underway. Officials emphasized that such anti-trafficking operations will continue to prevent exploitation and protect vulnerable communities.
This latest rescue highlights the persistence of maritime trafficking networks in the Bay of Bengal, despite repeated crackdowns. Authorities warn that traffickers are exploiting poverty and desperation, targeting both Bangladeshis and Rohingya refugees.
