Cox’s Bazar, Sept. 19 (V7N) — Police recovered the throat-slit body of a timber trader in Baishari area of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Jafar Alam Babul, 45, a resident of the Lombabil area. He was involved in the timber business.
Police recovered his body from in front of Keyang Temple in Titapara area of Ward No. 6 of Baishari Union at around 7:30 a.m., according to local sources.
Family members said Babul left home at around 8 p.m. on Thursday and did not return during the night. They were informed by local residents on Friday morning that his body had been found near the temple.
Sub-Inspector Moniruzzaman of the Baishari Investigation Centre went to the scene with police personnel after receiving the information. The body was later recovered and arrangements were made to send it for autopsy.
Police have initially identified Koksing Marma, 30, as a suspect. However, police said there is no conclusive evidence so far linking him to the killing. Another person, identified as Angkiya Ching Marma, was reportedly inside the temple at the time.
Some local residents said drug use and gambling have increased in the Baishari area recently, leading to disputes on several occasions. Some speculated that Babul may have been killed following a dispute over gambling, but police have not confirmed any such motive.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozammel Haque said the incident was being investigated seriously.
“A suspect has been identified initially, but his involvement in the killing has not yet been confirmed,” he said, adding that police were working to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
Police said investigations were underway at the scene and surrounding areas to establish the circumstances and timing of the killing and identify those involved.
