Cox’s Bazar, Sept 13 (V7N) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 100,000 yaba tablets during an operation along the Palongkhali border in Ukhiya early Saturday. Two suspected carriers fled the scene after abandoning two polythene bags containing the drugs.

The operation was conducted at a place locally known as Rizvir Gher within the area of responsibility of the Palongkhali Border Outpost (BOP) at around 5:50am.

According to BGB sources, a special patrol team took up position in the border area following intelligence reports about a possible drug smuggling attempt.

At around 5:50am, BGB personnel spotted two men entering Bangladesh from Myanmar. When the patrol team challenged them, the two men dropped the two polythene bags they were carrying and fled towards a nearby village.

The BGB team later searched the abandoned bags and recovered 100,000 yaba tablets. The tablets were found inside blue airtight packets wrapped in khaki-coloured packaging.

Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-64, said intelligence surveillance had been intensified to identify drug suppliers and smugglers and bring them to justice.

“Anti-drug and anti-smuggling operations along the border will continue,” he said.

60,000 Yaba Tablets Seized in Naikhongchhari, One Arrested

Meanwhile, police in Naikhongchhari, Bandarban, arrested a man with 60,000 yaba tablets during a separate operation on Saturday afternoon.

The suspect was identified as Jasin Uddin, 42, a resident of Maulvikhata area in Ward No. 9 of Kachchhapia Union under Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

Police conducted the operation at around 2:30pm in front of Russell Computer shop, east of the Shaheed Minar at Naikhongchhari Upazila Parishad.

According to police, the operation was led by Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mozammel Haque.

Police said six cards of yaba tablets were recovered from Jasin Uddin during the operation, with the total quantity estimated at around 60,000 tablets. An auto-rickshaw was also seized.

Naikhongchhari Police Station OC Mohammad Mozammel Haque said a case had been filed against the arrested man under the Narcotics Control Act.

The two separate seizures highlight continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the trafficking of yaba and other narcotics through the Bangladesh-Myanmar border region.
