Lalmonirhat, Jul 22 (V7N) – The water level of the Teesta River has risen sharply due to heavy rainfall and runoff from upstream, bringing it close to the danger level and raising fresh fears of flooding in low-lying areas along the riverbanks.
Residents of char areas are growing increasingly anxious as the river continues to swell, while agricultural land in several low-lying areas has already begun to go under water.
According to officials, the Teesta was flowing just 1 centimetre below the danger level at Dalia Point at around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday (July 22).
In response to the rising water pressure, authorities have opened all 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage, the country's largest irrigation project, to ease the flow of water.
The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) warned that the Teesta River could rise above the danger level within the next 24 hours if upstream inflows continue.
Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, while people living in vulnerable riverside and char areas have been advised to remain alert as the risk of flooding increases.
