Dhaka, August 2 (V7N) - Lack of proper safety measures in commercial storage facilities continues to pose serious fire hazards in the capital, with the latest incident reported from a warehouse on the fifth floor of Sundarban Square Market.
A fire broke out at a warehouse on the fifth floor of Sundarban Square Market in the capital around 10:00 AM on Saturday, prompting immediate response from the Fire Service and Civil Defence. Though no casualties were reported, the incident once again highlights the widespread neglect of fire safety protocols in commercial storage facilities across Dhaka.
According to preliminary investigations, the warehouse lacked basic fire safety measures. The storage unit had no adequate ventilation, such as windows or air ducts, and failed to follow essential fire prevention guidelines. Sources from the Fire Service stated that flammable items were stored carelessly, and smoking was reportedly a common practice inside the premises — both direct violations of standard warehouse safety regulations.
Officials pointed out that the fire could have been far more devastating had it spread to adjoining units. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after nearly an hour of effort using multiple units and equipment.
Experts have long warned that many warehouses, especially those located in densely populated commercial complexes, operate in clear violation of national building codes and fire safety standards. These include the lack of fire exits, fire extinguishers, alarms, and clearly marked evacuation routes. The absence of routine inspections allows these violations to continue unchecked.
Authorities have begun investigating the cause of the fire and whether the warehouse had any valid fire safety clearance. Meanwhile, the building's management committee has been summoned for questioning.
Fire officials stressed that without stricter enforcement and regular monitoring, such incidents will continue to occur, putting lives and property at risk. They also urged business owners to follow fire safety rules strictly and conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness in case of emergencies.
As Dhaka’s commercial hubs grow denser and more vertical, safety experts emphasize that prevention must take precedence over reaction — starting with the strict implementation of fire safety protocols in all storage and business premises.
