DHAKA, July 29 (V7N) – The Jatrabari-Mawa Highway, a vital transportation corridor in Dhaka South, remains in a state of severe disrepair, posing daily risks to both vehicles and pedestrians. Despite being a critical route connecting the capital to southern districts, the road has not undergone proper maintenance for an extended period.

Large potholes, uneven surfaces, and waterlogging are common along several stretches of the road, severely disrupting traffic flow. Drivers are forced to navigate hazardous conditions, often resulting in traffic congestion, accidents, and vehicle damage. Pedestrians, too, face significant danger while walking along the poorly maintained route, especially during the monsoon season when visibility and road conditions worsen.
Local residents and commuters have expressed growing frustration over the prolonged neglect by relevant authorities. Despite repeated calls for urgent repairs, no substantial action has been taken. Transport workers and bus operators also complain of frequent breakdowns and higher maintenance costs due to the road’s condition.
According to several local shop owners and rickshaw pullers, the deterioration of the highway has negatively impacted business and daily income. “The road is getting worse day by day. It’s difficult for passengers to even reach the terminals safely,” said one rickshaw driver operating near Jatrabari.
Urban planners and transport experts have called for immediate intervention, emphasizing that the Jatrabari-Mawa route plays a key role in connecting Dhaka with the Padma Bridge corridor and several southern districts. Left unrepaired, the road’s condition is expected to further deteriorate, increasing safety risks and harming economic activities along the route.
Despite its strategic importance, the continued inaction has raised concerns over accountability and urban infrastructure management. Residents are now demanding that the city corporation and the Roads and Highways Department take immediate steps to initiate comprehensive repair and maintenance work.
