Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq emphasized that the provision of legal aid to the poor and vulnerable is fundamental to the country's adherence to the rule of law, justice, human rights, and social equity. He asserted this during his address as the chief guest at the inaugural event of National Legal Aid Day at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

Minister Anisul Huq highlighted that legal aid is not a charitable act but a right for those who are financially disadvantaged. He underscored that ensuring access to justice for all citizens, regardless of their financial status, aligns with the vision of the country's founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as enshrined in the constitution.

Expressing disappointment over the prolonged neglect of legal aid for the financially insolvent over the past 21 years, Minister Huq credited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for enacting the Legal Aid Services Act in 2000 during her first term.

He urged for the expansion of legal aid services to reach the doorstep of those in need, emphasizing the government's commitment, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership, to provide justice to the poor through legal aid.

Additionally, Minister Huq called for enhancing the effectiveness of upazila and union legal aid committees, increasing engagement with prisons, and incorporating social and humane aspects alongside customary law in the provision of legal aid. He also advocated for greater collaboration between public and private agencies to ensure swift and efficient legal aid delivery.

Highlighting the achievements of legal aid officers, Minister Huq stated that they have resolved 1,10,836 disputes nationwide from July 2015 to March 2024.

The event, chaired by Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar, also featured remarks from National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) director Mohammad Al Mamun. The National Legal Aid Day is observed across the country with the theme "Smart Legal Aid, Smart Country, Bangabandhu's Bangladesh," aiming to uphold the rule of law, fundamental human rights, and justice for all through various programs at the district levels.
