UKHIYA, July 23 (V7N) — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 140,000 yaba tablets during an operation along the Ukhiya border in Cox’s Bazar. The estimated market value of the seized drugs is around Tk 4.20 crore.
No one was arrested in connection with the seizure, the Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB) said in a press release on Wednesday.
According to BGB sources, a special patrol team from Palongkhali Border Outpost launched an operation based on secret information at around 9:55pm on Tuesday in the Jorakathi area of Ulubunia village under Palongkhali Union of Ukhiya.
During the operation, the patrol team spotted three suspected individuals moving from Myanmar towards Bangladesh and signalled them to stop. However, the suspects attempted to flee, prompting BGB personnel to chase them.
At one stage, the suspects abandoned a sack and escaped back towards Myanmar. BGB members fired several blank shots to bring the situation under control. A search of the abandoned sack later led to the recovery of 140,000 yaba tablets.
BGB said a search operation was conducted in the area after the incident, but no one could be detained. Intelligence monitoring has been intensified to identify and arrest those involved in the drug smuggling operation.
Ukhiya Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam confirmed the operation and said BGB activities would continue to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling along the border.
