Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N)- Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed, presidential candidate of the 11-party alliance, has alleged that lawmakers were unable to vote according to their personal choice in the presidential election because Article 70 of the Constitution remains in force.
He made the remarks while responding to the outcome of the presidential election at his residence in Mohakhali, Dhaka, on Thursday (August 20).
Oli Ahmed pointed out that the BNP had pledged in its 31-point reform plan to repeal Article 70 of the Constitution. However, he said the provision has not yet been removed.
According to the current provision, MPs risk losing their parliamentary seats if they vote against their party’s decision. Oli said this restriction prevented lawmakers from exercising their independent choice during the presidential election.
Referring to various public opinion surveys on the presidential election, Oli claimed that 68 percent of respondents had expressed support for him.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring good governance and accountability, saying the people of Bangladesh would not be able to live in peace without these principles.
Following the announcement of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s victory, Oli Ahmed congratulated him on behalf of the 11-party alliance.
He also urged the newly elected president to work for the country and ensure effective governance in cooperation with the people.
