Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman congratulated newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with a red rose following the announcement of the presidential election results.
The results were announced on Thursday (August 20) after the ballots were counted in the meeting room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Immediately after the announcement, the prime minister congratulated Mirza Fakhrul, who was elected as the country’s 23rd president.
Voting in the presidential election took place from 2pm to 5pm. The Election Commission began counting the ballots after voting ended and subsequently announced the results.
BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the election with 255 votes. His rival, Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.
A total of 349 lawmakers were eligible to vote in the election.
The election marked only the second time in 35 years that members of parliament have voted in a contested presidential election since the parliamentary system of government was restored in 1991.
The first presidential election following the restoration of the parliamentary system was held in 1991. The following seven presidents were elected unopposed.
