Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N)- The President of Bangladesh holds the highest constitutional position in the state. Formal state functions are carried out in the president’s name, while the Constitution grants the head of state specific powers and privileges.
Under the Constitution, the President has the authority to appoint the prime minister and the chief justice. However, except for these constitutional responsibilities and other specific functions, the President generally exercises executive powers on the advice of the prime minister.
Under Article 49 of the Constitution, the President has the power to grant pardons, reprieves, respites or remissions of punishment imposed by a court, tribunal or other authority.
The President is also entitled to a range of official facilities. Bangabhaban serves as the official residence, while the state provides a salary, allowances, transportation, medical treatment and other facilities.
The President’s monthly remuneration is Tk 1.2 lakh, which is exempt from income tax. An annual allowance is also allocated for entertainment and related official expenses, with the relevant expenditure exempt from audit under applicable provisions.
The government bears the costs of maintaining and decorating Bangabhaban, as well as other necessary expenses related to the President’s official residence. Official transportation, including a vehicle and other necessary travel facilities, is also provided.
For official foreign visits, the President receives allowances at government-prescribed rates.
The President also has a discretionary fund. An annual allocation of Tk 2 crore is made to the fund, which the President can use for designated purposes through individuals or institutions.
The President and members of the President’s family are entitled to free medical treatment at hospitals within Bangladesh. If treatment is required abroad, the government bears the associated expenses under the applicable rules.
There is also a dedicated allocation for the President’s air travel. An annual amount of Tk 27 lakh is allocated for air transportation expenses related to official duties.
In addition to these benefits, the President enjoys several constitutional privileges and powers. The scope of these powers, however, is defined by the Constitution and relevant laws.
Meanwhile, voting in Bangladesh’s 23rd presidential election was held on Thursday (August 20) at the Parliament House. Voting took place from 2pm to 5pm.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir contested the election as the ruling party’s candidate, while Colonel Oli Ahmed contested as the candidate of the opposition alliance.
