Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N)- Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has been appointed acting secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), succeeding Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who recently stepped down from the post after being nominated as the party’s presidential candidate.

The BNP announced the appointment in a press release on Thursday (August 20).

According to the statement, BNP National Standing Committee member Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has been nominated as acting secretary general under Article 7(b)(6) of the party’s constitution. His appointment takes effect immediately.

The position of BNP secretary general had remained vacant since Mirza Fakhrul stepped down after the party officially announced his nomination for the presidential election on August 13.

Rizvi, who previously served as the party’s senior joint secretary general, had been widely speculated to take over as acting secretary general. The BNP formally confirmed his appointment following the announcement of the presidential election results.

Earlier on August 15, four new leaders were inducted into the BNP’s National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body. Rizvi was among them.

The other three newly appointed members are BNP Chairperson’s adviser Aman Ullah Aman, Farhad Halim and Md. Ismail Zabiullah.

Rizvi will now oversee the party’s day-to-day organizational activities as acting secretary general.
