Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N)- The parliamentary seat and ministerial position held by Thakurgaon-1 MP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will become vacant once he takes the oath as president, ruling party Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has said.
He made the remarks during a press briefing with journalists at the Parliament House on Thursday (August 20), ahead of the presidential election.
The Chief Whip said Mirza Fakhrul would cease to be a member of parliament and a minister immediately after taking the presidential oath.
“From then on, he will be His Excellency the President,” Moni said.
He added that by-elections would subsequently be held for the parliamentary seat that becomes vacant.
Asked about the participation of Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in the presidential election, Moni said the matter should be addressed by the party itself.
The Chief Whip also said that Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, who is currently a member of parliament, would cast his vote in the presidential election.
