Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N)- Acting President and Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has officially left Bangabhaban after completing his tenure as the country’s acting head of state.
He was given a guard of honor at a farewell ceremony on Thursday (August 20) before departing Bangabhaban.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the responsibilities of acting president on July 24 following the resignation of former President Md. Shahabuddin. He took charge in accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution after accepting the former president’s resignation.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s 23rd presidential election is being held today, Thursday (August 20). Voting is scheduled to continue from 2pm to 5pm.
Two candidates are contesting the election: BNP nominee Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and candidate of the opposition 11-party alliance Oli Ahmed.
The newly elected president is scheduled to take the oath of office at Bangabhaban on Friday (August 21) evening.
Under Article 70 of the Constitution, MPs are not permitted to vote against their party’s nominee. As the BNP holds the majority in parliament and has nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he is widely expected to become Bangladesh’s 23rd president.
