Dhaka, Jul 24 (V7N)- Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has taken charge as the Acting President of Bangladesh following the resignation of President Md. Shahabuddin.

The Speaker confirmed the development at an emergency press conference held at the oath-taking hall of the Parliament around 5:30 pm on Friday (July 24).

Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said President Md. Shahabuddin submitted his signed resignation letter to him at 5:01 pm in accordance with Clause 3 of Article 50 of the Constitution. He added that he had accepted the resignation letter.

Following the resignation, the Speaker announced that he has assumed the responsibilities of the President under Article 54 of the Constitution. He also instructed the National Parliament Secretariat to preserve official records and complete necessary administrative procedures regarding the matter.

Speaking about the significance of the development, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said the resignation of a President is a serious constitutional matter connected with the interests of the country.

"The President is also a human being and can become ill. He has disclosed his health condition and mentioned in writing the illnesses he is suffering from, including instances of losing consciousness. Since he himself has stated this, there is no need for a separate medical certificate," he said.

The Acting President expressed hope that the resignation would end uncertainty and prevent any confusion, instability or misunderstanding regarding the issue.

Referring to Md. Shahabuddin's tenure, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that although he was elected during the previous government, he believes Shahabuddin respected and supported the government elected through the people's vote.

According to constitutional provisions, if the presidential office becomes vacant due to death, resignation, physical incapacity or removal from office, the Speaker performs the duties of the President until a new President is elected.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal will perform the duties of the Speaker while Hafiz Uddin Ahmed serves as Acting President.

Md. Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, during the Awami League government. His five-year constitutional term was scheduled to end in April 2028, leaving around one year and nine months remaining before his resignation.
