Dhaka, Jul 24 (V7N)- President Md. Shahabuddin has resigned from the post of President of Bangladesh citing health reasons. His resignation letter reached the National Parliament Secretariat on Friday (July 24) afternoon.
According to constitutional provisions, if the office of the President becomes vacant due to death, resignation, physical incapacity or removal from office, the Speaker of Parliament will perform the duties of the President until a new President is elected.
Following the submission of President Shahabuddin’s resignation letter, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will now assume the responsibilities of the Acting President in accordance with the Constitution.
Meanwhile, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has called an emergency press conference regarding the President’s resignation at 5:00 pm on Friday.
Md. Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, during the Awami League government. According to the Constitution, his five-year tenure was scheduled to end in April 2028.
His resignation came approximately one year and nine months before the completion of his presidential term.
