Dhaka, Jul 24 (V7N)- Speculation over the possible resignation of Bangladesh President Md. Shahabuddin has intensified, with reports suggesting that preparations for his resignation have been completed at Bangabhaban.

Amid the growing discussion, Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed returned to the country on Thursday (July 24), cutting short his personal visit to Thailand. Reports said his return was linked to the possibility of the president's resignation.

Sources at Bangabhaban said all necessary preparations regarding the resignation process have been completed and further steps will be taken after receiving time from the Speaker.

According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, a president's signed resignation letter must be submitted to the Speaker of Parliament. If President Md. Shahabuddin resigns, a new president will have to be elected by members of parliament within 90 days as per Article 123 of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, under Article 54 of the Constitution, if the presidential post becomes vacant, the Speaker will carry out the responsibilities of the president until a new president is elected.

However, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said he was not aware of any decision regarding the president's resignation. Speaking after returning to the country on Friday around 12:15 pm, he said his medical check-up abroad had been completed and he returned due to his personal commitments.

"I was outside the country, so I did not hear anything about the resignation of the President. I will learn about it now. If the President resigns, the Speaker will perform the duties according to the Constitution," he said.

Meanwhile, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged people not to believe rumours regarding the president's resignation.

Responding to questions from journalists after attending the Bengal Delta Conference at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka, he said, "I do not believe in rumours. Political discussions cannot be made based only on newspaper reports."

Md. Shahabuddin took oath as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. His constitutional tenure is scheduled to continue until April 2028. He assumed office during the Awami League government period and has continued serving under subsequent political developments, including the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the elected government led by Tarique Rahman.
