Dhaka, Jul 20 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman received a courtesy call from the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat on Monday (July 20).
During the meeting, the ILO Director-General congratulated Tarique Rahman on assuming the office of Prime Minister and said that international confidence in Bangladesh has increased further following the formation of a government elected by the people.
He said the ILO is interested in strengthening its long-standing partnership with Bangladesh and will continue working closely with the government to support the development of the country’s labour sector.
The ILO chief also appreciated Bangladesh’s ongoing labour sector reforms and the government’s commitment to implementing international labour standards, saying these efforts are receiving positive attention globally.
During the meeting, he congratulated Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on being elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, describing the achievement as an important recognition of Bangladesh’s diplomatic strength and international acceptance.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said her government is giving the highest priority to protecting workers’ rights, ensuring workplace safety and implementing international labour standards. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a worker-friendly and sustainable employment environment.
The ILO Director-General expressed his commitment to expanding cooperation with Bangladesh and working together to further improve the labour sector.
The meeting also discussed several important issues, including workers’ social security, skill development, employment generation and preparing skilled human resources to meet the demands of the changing global labour market.
Both sides exchanged views on the progress of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector, workplace safety, development of the informal labour market and the country’s achievements in implementing international labour standards.
The meeting emphasized strengthening cooperation between the government and the ILO to accelerate ongoing labour sector reforms.
In addition, discussions were held on ensuring the rights and welfare of migrant workers, establishing a safe and organized migration system, and enhancing cooperation in developing the skills of Bangladeshi workers seeking employment abroad.
