Dhaka, Jul 09 (V7N)- State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam has said that Bangladesh is continuing diplomatic efforts to bring back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, describing her as a convicted fugitive under Bangladeshi law.

Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday afternoon, the state minister said Sheikh Hasina is currently abroad after being convicted in multiple cases in Bangladesh, adding that her recent statements are not relevant to the government's legal and diplomatic efforts.

"The convicted accused Sheikh Hasina is currently a fugitive abroad after being convicted of numerous injustices and crimes in Bangladesh. Therefore, what she says is not relevant in this context," Shama Obaid Islam said.

The state minister added that Dhaka is seeking to secure Sheikh Hasina's return through the existing prisoner exchange agreement, while continuing diplomatic engagement on the matter.

Addressing bilateral relations with India, she said discussions between Dhaka and New Delhi on the renewal of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which is due to expire in December, are progressing positively.

Shama Obaid Islam also said the government is giving priority to professionalism and merit in appointments to key diplomatic positions, including the Foreign Secretary, Bangladesh's permanent representatives in New York and Geneva, and the country's new High Commissioners to the United Kingdom and India.

She added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is carrying out regular personnel reshuffles based on qualifications, competence and professional merit, describing the process as an ongoing effort to strengthen Bangladesh's diplomatic service.
