Dhaka, Jul 05 (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the formulation of an action plan to increase Bangladesh's carbon credits by reducing carbon emissions and strengthening the country's participation in the international carbon market.

The directive came during a meeting on climate change held at the Prime Minister's Office in the Cabinet Division of the Secretariat on Sunday.

The meeting reviewed the country's potential to earn more carbon credits through emission reduction initiatives and discussed measures to maximize those opportunities.

The Prime Minister emphasized expanding the use of renewable energy, promoting environmentally friendly technologies in the industrial sector, improving energy efficiency, conserving forests and increasing carbon absorption through large-scale tree plantation programmes.

He also instructed the relevant authorities to prepare a realistic plan to capitalize on Bangladesh's potential in the international carbon market.

During the meeting, Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of ensuring transparency in carbon credit management, developing a reliable national database and strengthening coordination with international organizations.

To improve inter-agency cooperation, the Prime Minister directed the formation of a committee comprising the relevant ministries and organizations to coordinate efforts aimed at achieving carbon credit targets.

Ministers and senior officials attending the meeting said that effective implementation of carbon emission reduction measures would significantly enhance Bangladesh's prospects of obtaining internationally recognized carbon credits.
