Sherpur, Jun 29 (V7N) — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has foiled an attempt by two individuals to illegally enter Bangladesh from India through the Tawakucha border in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur and sent them back across the border.
According to BGB officials, suspected human traffickers from India attempted to send the two individuals into Bangladesh through the border area adjacent to the Tawakucha BGB camp on Monday morning.
Patrolling members of the Tawakucha Camp under the Mymensingh Battalion (39 BGB), led by Camp Commander Havildar Mustafizur Rahman, intercepted the pair at around 9:20 a.m. near Main Pillar (MP) 1097 along the Sherpur border while they were entering Bangladesh. They were subsequently escorted back to the Indian side.
BGB sources said the identities of the two individuals could not be confirmed. During preliminary questioning, they claimed to be residents of Jessore district but were unable to provide specific information to verify their identities.
Local residents said the two individuals had been seen staying near the barbed-wire fence since Sunday evening. According to witnesses, they entered Bangladesh at around 9:00 a.m. on Monday before being intercepted by BGB personnel and returned across the border. They are reportedly now staying in the no-man's-land area near border pillar 1097.
Speaking about the incident, Tawakucha BGB Camp Commander Havildar Mustafizur Rahman said, "Two individuals were found in the border area this morning. We have sent them back to the Indian side. We have learned that they are currently staying near pillar number 1097. We remain on the highest alert to prevent all forms of illegal infiltration, including human trafficking, along the border."
Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over repeated attempts by human traffickers to facilitate illegal crossings through the border area and urged authorities to maintain strict surveillance.
