Putrajaya, Jun 22 (V7N) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to expedite the opening of the labour market for Bangladeshi workers, emphasizing the need for a transparent and fair recruitment system.
He made the remarks at a joint press conference held at the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya at 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday.
The Prime Minister said he requested Malaysia to consider hiring more Bangladeshi workers while also fast-tracking the reopening of employment opportunities. He also raised concerns regarding the legalization of undocumented workers and the possible repatriation of detained Bangladeshi nationals.
Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of ensuring a transparent, fair and affordable recruitment process, adding that reducing the role of middlemen would help lower migration costs for workers.
Describing Malaysia as a long-standing and trusted partner, the Prime Minister said bilateral relations are built on mutual trust, shared values and strong people-to-people ties.
He said extensive and productive discussions were held with the Malaysian leadership, covering a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues.
On the Rohingya crisis, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the situation of displaced Rohingya people sheltered in Bangladesh and thanked Malaysia for its continued support for their safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation.
Tarique Rahman also said Bangladesh is seeking closer engagement with ASEAN and expressed hope that the country would become a sectoral dialogue partner of the regional bloc.
Concluding the press conference, he extended an invitation to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time, saying the people of Bangladesh would warmly welcome them.
