DHAKA, Jun 18 (V7N) – Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a strong democratic Bangladesh and ensuring an independent and responsible media environment.
He made the remarks on Thursday morning while speaking at a workshop held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka, organized to develop the outline of the proposed National Media Commission.
The minister said the government is working with a broader commitment to strengthen democratic institutions and promote media freedom as part of its reform agenda.
Emphasizing accountability, he noted that no individual or institution, including the government, is above mistakes, and urged the media to highlight errors in a constructive manner.
He further said that reforms will be carried out inclusively, involving stakeholders from all sectors to build a more transparent and democratic state structure.
Describing the workshop as a landmark initiative, the minister said it is the first time such a broad-based engagement with media stakeholders has been possible. He added that this presents a significant opportunity for the country’s media sector and could have a long-term impact on its development.
Zahir Uddin Swapan also stated that the government will act as a coordinator to ensure media freedom, and a clear roadmap will be developed in consultation with relevant media organizations and stakeholders.
Officials present at the event said the proposed National Media Commission is expected to play a key role in shaping policies related to press freedom, media regulation, and institutional transparency in Bangladesh.
