Chattogram, Jun 16 (V7N)- The long-pending Chinese Economic Zone project in Anwara, Chattogram, is reportedly moving forward again ahead of the proposed visit of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to Beijing.
The matter was reviewed in a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, chaired by the Prime Minister, according to sources.
The proposed economic zone will be developed on 783 acres of land in Anwara with an estimated project cost of Tk 4,189 crore. Of this, around Tk 2,500 crore will be provided as a loan from China. The project will be implemented by the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority over a five-year period.
Officials said the initiative aims to expand Chinese investment in Bangladesh. If implemented, the project is expected to attract around $500 million in investment and generate employment for nearly 100,000 people. It will also include major infrastructure components such as gas and power connections, roads, bridges, a 1,200-meter jetty, water storage facilities, and a treatment plant.
The China Road and Bridge Corporation has reportedly been nominated as the surveyor and developer for the project.
In the same ECNEC meeting, three projects under the Ministry of Water Resources were also discussed, along with a revised proposal to establish technical schools and colleges in 100 upazilas across the country.
