Dhaka, Jun 02 (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has congratulated Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Prime Minister conveyed his congratulations through a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday night.

In his message, Tarique Rahman described the election as a significant achievement for Bangladesh and a reflection of the country's growing stature in the international arena.

“This achievement reflects Bangladesh’s growing contribution and credibility on the global stage. We believe that he will proudly represent Bangladesh and promote connectivity, dialogue and cooperation to address multilateral and shared challenges. We wish him every success in this new responsibility,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Earlier on Tuesday, Dr. Khalilur Rahman was elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly after defeating Cyprus' candidate, Andreas S. Kakouris.

A total of 190 member states participated in the voting at the United Nations headquarters. Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured 99 votes, while Andreas S. Kakouris received 91 votes.

With this victory, Bangladesh will assume the presidency of the UN General Assembly for the second time in its history. Dr. Khalilur Rahman is scheduled to preside over the 81st session of the Assembly, which will begin in September.
