Dhaka, May 17 (V7N) — Bangladesh is moving beyond being a technology consumer and is working toward becoming a technology producer and exporter, said Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam.
He made the remarks on Sunday (May 17) while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Telecommunication and Information Society Day in Dhaka.
The minister said the government’s vision is to expand the use of technology not only for consumption but also for service delivery and production, highlighting ongoing digital transformation efforts across the country. He also noted that AI-based traffic surveillance cameras are already helping restore order in the capital’s traffic management system.
He further announced that free broadband internet services are being introduced for passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport as part of efforts to improve digital accessibility.
Prime Minister’s Advisor Rehan Asif Asad also attended the event, stating that Bangladesh aims to become one of the top 10 digital economies in the world within the next 10 years. He said the government is working on a long-term digital infrastructure plan to support this goal.
According to the advisor, the country plans to develop a robust fiber network to support 5G connectivity within the next five years. He also added that initiatives are underway to introduce digital ID systems and digital wallets for every citizen within the next two years, marking a major step toward a fully digital public service ecosystem.
