Comilla, May 16 (V7N) – BNP Chairperson and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the party is committed to fulfilling its election promises, highlighting ongoing social welfare initiatives and future development plans during a road meeting in Comilla on Saturday.

Speaking at a gathering at Lakshmipur Bazar ground in Barura upazila of Comilla around noon, he said that the BNP-led government has already introduced several welfare-oriented measures, including family card distribution, canal excavation programs, and honorariums for imams and muezzins serving religious institutions.

He said the government is focused on implementing its commitments, stating that “BNP fulfills the promises it makes to the people when it is in charge of running the government.”

Referring to the previous political situation, Tarique Rahman alleged that the country had gone through a period of repression, during which dissent was suppressed. He said that people had later expressed their democratic aspirations through the 2024 student-public movement, which he described as a turning point that reshaped the country’s political landscape.

The BNP leader also emphasized national reconstruction, saying that while political liberation had been achieved, rebuilding institutions and governance remains the next major task.

During the visit, he announced plans to upgrade Comilla to a divisional status and establish an agricultural university in the region. He said discussions would be held with the Education Ministry regarding the proposed university, adding that steps would be taken after reviewing all relevant considerations.

Local leaders and party supporters attended the program, where enthusiasm was seen over the visit of the BNP chief and the announcements made during the event.
