Dhaka, May 08 (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has paid tribute to Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his 165th birth anniversary.

On Thursday evening (May 7), the Prime Minister shared a tribute message on his verified Facebook page honoring the world poet and his contribution to Bengali literature, culture and humanity.

In the message, Tarique Rahman wrote, “On the occasion of the 165th birth anniversary of the greatest voice of Bengali literature, I pay my deepest respects to the immortal and undying memory of the world poet Rabindranath Tagore. I wish eternal peace for his departed soul.”

He described world peace and human welfare as the central themes of Tagore’s timeless creativity, saying the poet praised humanity, peace, love and nature through poetry, music, novels, short stories, plays, dance dramas and paintings.

The Prime Minister also noted that Tagore worked throughout his life to spread the spirit of internationalism guided by reason and humanity.

Highlighting Tagore’s role in Bangladesh’s national life, Tarique Rahman said the poet’s songs inspired people during the Liberation War and reflected the joys, sorrows and struggles of Bengal’s common people.

He further stated that Tagore’s famous composition Amar Sonar Bangla has become the national anthem of Bangladesh.

Referring to Tagore’s Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali, the Prime Minister said he was the first Asian to receive the prestigious recognition in world literature.

Tarique Rahman also emphasized the relevance of Tagore’s philosophy in today’s world amid ongoing wars, extremism and global conflicts, saying the poet’s ideals of peace and humanity remain highly significant.

He praised Tagore’s contribution to education and recalled the establishment of Santiniketan as a center for enlightened learning, where practical education was given equal importance alongside academic studies.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that this year’s celebrations marking Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary would be observed peacefully and successfully across the country.
