Dhaka, Mar 12 (V7N) – Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Adviser for Local Government and Rural Development, has said that establishing a truly free media should be a key goal for the country.
He made the remarks while speaking at an iftar mahfil organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and the Dhaka Union of Journalists at the National Press Club on Wednesday (March 11).
Mirza Fakhrul said, “We always talk about the freedom of the press and media. We must believe in it and work based on that belief.” He also stressed that journalists should never face attacks, adding that such incidents resemble the behavior of authoritarian regimes.
Highlighting the government’s political vision, he said efforts are underway to build a new democratic framework in parliament. According to him, steps will be taken to institutionalize democracy and make parliament the center of national decision-making and political activity.
Calling for a renewed political environment in Bangladesh, Mirza Fakhrul urged all those who believe in liberal democracy and free media to seize the opportunity to strengthen democratic institutions.
He added that through collective efforts, Bangladesh can move forward as a democratic and liberal state with an independent media environment.
