Dhaka, Feb 26 (V7N) — Shipping, Rail, Bridges and Road Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam Robi has said extortion is a criminal offense and the government will take action wherever such activities are found on roads and highways.

He made the remarks while briefing journalists on Eid travel preparations at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.

The minister said mobile courts will remain active to prevent overcharging of fares during the Eid rush. To ensure safe waterway travel, operations of bulkheads and speedboats will remain suspended for a total of 10 days before and after Eid.

He also announced that the footpath from Zero Point to Sadarghat will be cleared of encroachments, and illegal parking in the area will not be allowed.

Clarifying his remarks, Sheikh Rabiul said extortion and lawful collections are not the same, noting that contributions collected by employers and workers for welfare or public service purposes are not illegal.

Authorities said further monitoring measures will be in place to ensure smooth and safe travel during the Eid holiday.
