Gournadi, Feb 22 (V7N) — The government has unveiled a plan to re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals across Bangladesh, with the official inauguration set to take place soon. The program was launched at the Kaplatli Canal in Sharikal Union of Gournadi Upazila by Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan.
Key Highlights
-
Tree Plantation Integration: Alongside canal excavation, trees will be planted on both sides of the canals. The initiative encourages participation from schools, colleges, institutions, and individuals to promote afforestation nationwide.
-
Agricultural Benefits: Minister Swapan noted that during former President Ziaur Rahman’s canal excavation program, food production increased. However, many canals were later filled, hindering agricultural productivity. The current project aims to restore these canals to boost farming.
-
Government Assurance: The Information Minister emphasized that the initiative is part of a non-partisan, institutionalized approach, reinforcing that the government will not create a party state.
This program is expected to improve water management, enhance agriculture, and support environmental sustainability across Bangladesh.
