Lakshmipur, Feb 20 (V7N) — Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has said there is no scope for extortion on roads anywhere in the country, stressing that the government will take a firm stance on the issue.

He made the remarks while responding to journalists’ questions at the Lakshmipur Circuit House around 11:00 am on Friday.

Waterlogging Projects in Lakshmipur

The minister said a new project has already been launched in Greater Noakhali to address long-standing waterlogging in Lakshmipur. The initiative includes dredging the Bhulua River and re-excavating the Rahmatkhali canal, which he said would help resolve a problem that has caused prolonged suffering for residents.

River Erosion and Canal Excavation

Referring to erosion along the Meghna River and Rahmatkhali Canal, he noted that measures are being taken based on a PGVL study to tackle the issue. He added that canal excavation will be carried out nationwide under the government’s 180-day program, with Lakshmipur included in the plan.

District Visit

The minister arrived in Lakshmipur on Thursday night on a three-day visit. On Friday morning, he held meetings with district administration officials and representatives of the Water Development Board at the Circuit House, where he was earlier accorded a guard of honor.

Officials say the initiatives are expected to improve drainage, reduce flooding risks and strengthen local infrastructure in the coastal region.
