Dhaka, February 6 (V7N)- Government employees on Friday surrounded the residence of the Chief Adviser at Jamuna, demanding the immediate publication and implementation of the 9th pay scale gazette proposed by the 9th National Pay Commission.
Around 11:00 am, the protesters broke through police barricades near Hotel Intercontinental and took position at the main entrance of Jamuna, chanting various slogans. The protest effectively brought the activities of the Advisory Council to a standstill.
After demonstrators remained at the main gate for nearly half an hour, police were seen firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Earlier in the morning, government employees gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital with the same demand. From there, they marched towards Jamuna, declaring that they would not return home unless the gazette is published today.
Protesters alleged that despite repeated assurances from the authorities, the gazette has yet to be issued. They claimed that injustice has been done to government employees, as the Pay Commission was formed during the interim government, but its recommendations have not been officially implemented.
The situation remained tense at the time of filing this report.
